WHY WAS SOCRATES SENTENCED TO DEATH?
Socrates is known as one of the founders of western philosophy and was a mentor to the famous Plato. According to the text "Why Socrates Died," Socrates was charged and placed on trial for allegedly "not believing in the gods recognized by the state" and for "corrupting the Athenian youth by his teachings." It seems as though in reading the text, Socrates was expert at making people think and challenging what they thought they knew, ultimately resulting in his making enemies. While defending himself, he presented that he had "conformed to the religious customs of his country and believed in God more than he feared man." Socrates upheld the traditions of his country but he always questioned them. The reasoning behind the laws, beliefs and traditions of his people seemed to contradict themselves which was why he was always questioning them. Socrates was 70 years old when he went to trial and sentenced to death by drinking a cup of poison hemlock.
WHY IS THERE CONFLICT (FOR SOME) BETWEEN SCIENCE AND RELIGION?
Science and religion are intertwined in many ways but some people still see a conflict between the two. According to “The Great Mystery: Matter vs. Spirit,” “the impasse between materialists and mystics isn’t whether or not their experiences exist, but how to best explain them.” The video “The Limits of Science” states that the limits of our skull is the limit of our understanding” which confirms that, because of the many laws of unknowns, if a scientist can’t tangibly prove how an experience occurred, their skull will limit their understanding refusing to give way or see that the experience is “real”; or they will try to “reason” some sort of explanation for the experience. “Mystics” on the other hand, will have the same experience and attribute it to divine intervention but since they also have no tangible evidence the conflict and debate between science and religion will always go on.
