2: Why is there a conflict between science and religion?
→ There are two reasons that account for this everlasting conflict, and both of them are ascribed to humans. They are limited-knowledge and narrow-mindedness.
The first basis is our knowledge. As according to the book Matter vs Spirit, one of the remarkable ideas is that we call the things that we cannot scientifically explain (yet) divine or holy or God’s creature. Besides from the examples given out in the book, religious people now still argue for the existence of God by the natural processes ,such as the core reasons for the formation of mountains, occeans or why disasters happen, that human knowledge have not yet to explain (this is just my personal observation without any offense to religious people, and I appologize if I disturbed anyone).
The second, which is also the most fundamental, basis for this conflict lies in the lack of concern for other people’s understanding and personal experience. The Sound Grenade game that was mentioned in the book is one of the examples. There are those who are not able to hear the high pitched (frequency) sound, but it does not mean that it does not exist, and people with severe trust issue (like the author’s brother or colleague) would not believe there is such thing. In the same way, it would be difficult to convince someone about some “invisible” existences that he or she cannot perceive through one of the five senses. This is why non-religious people suspect the truthfulness of God (or the gods); they cannot see, hear, smell, taste or touch such existences. In the same way, religious people would not believe Richard Feynman’s saying “Things are made of littler things that jiggle” or the evolution because none of their senses are aware of such things. Not only that they do not believe in the opponents’ idea, but they also argue that the opposition is WRONG, and this is why there has always been conflict between religion and science.
1: Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
→ Although Socrates was legally convicted with not believing in God that the states now then believed and with corrupting the young man, the core reasons for his sentence are completely opposite.
Socrates did not only believe in God, he was actually active in the mission of spreading God’s mentorship, and this is why he got charged. At first, especially in terms of politics, it is so arrogant of him to wandering around and calling people unwise or “know nothing”. However, when he was at the trial, he cited god’s teaching “human wisdom is worth little or nothing”, which is what Socrates tried to tell other people. In addition, Socrates has also used his intelligence to prove that he believed in God by linking the teaching of demon to its association to god.
However, what he actually did did not cause his sentence; Socrates was sentenced because he was living among the jealous and wicked men. With Socrates’ excellent refutation against his conviction, any judge would have been convinced by him, since he was able to point out that he believed in God and that he actually helped but corrupted young men in town. Nevertheless, it is stated in the book that this judge, Athenians, has long time been told by Socrates’ opposition that Socrates is deviant, thus this must be why the judge ruled him guilty. In addition, the sentence also lied on the decision of the multitude, which is composed of those who were called unwise by Socrates. Therefore, just because of human’s jealousy, Socrates was sentenced to death.
