Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death for two reasons. First he believed in things that weren’t from the social norm. His society believed in other gods that he refused to believe in. As a philosopher that Socrates was, he questioned the Athenians religion and everything around him. Questioning the religion at the time was not acceptable and because of it was punished. Socrates had a curious mind and was known as “talkative. He himself tells Euth in “How Socrates Died” he has a way of pouring his thoughts to everyone he meets and would even pay to have someone listen to him (p.7). Secondly, he was corrupting the youth’s way of thinking by applying his thoughts and opinions by expressing himself to them. Although, in trial Socrates never admitted to the charges he was given, he still was put to death by basically being forced to commit suicide. What I find amazingly beautiful is he died for what he believed in. He died wrapped in his thoughts and curiosity.
Why is there a conflict for some between science and religion?
Growing up in a religious catholic household I was always taught that science exists, but we are only human and we could only know so much from what is tested. The film “The limit of Science demonstrates this by stating that a person skull is the limit of our understanding.” Then there is God and the things that could never be proven because there is faith and there are things that could never be proven to us because we aren’t God. Things such as miracles, spirits and things we feel that science still today cannot prove. I believe to many people, especially people that do not believe in religion decide to only truly believe in the things that can be tested and proved. They need to have facts and research and see with their own eyes to believe it. I believed in religion for many years because that is how I was brought up, but as a young adult I started questioning many things that I was taught as a child, I stopped attending church every Sunday because it felt robotic and pointless. I started questioning and searching for a God that felt that I could talk to and relate to. I started my own journey is finding my own faith and not one that I was forced to know. So to answer the question there is conflict between science and religion because science could be proven by facts and tested research and to many religion and God still is a wondering subject.
