TWO ESSAY QUESTIONS REQUIRED:
1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
In the book 'How Socrates Died' there is a conversation between Socrates and Euthyphro in which Socrates explains what he is being tried for. The first reason stated is that he was "corrupting the youth" with his teachings as well as creating his own gods and not believing in the old ones. Socrates, I believe had done no wrong having new thoughts and beliefs, fighting for oneself when the whole world seems to be against you is a job for a man with great integrity. Throughout the trial Socrates fights for himself asking Melitus question after question as to why he feels that he has done and is being accused of is wrong. In the end Socrates was proven guilty and drank the poison himself, "praying that his departure from this to another world might be happy." (How Socrates died, 79)
2. Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
Science and religion often have conflict in many peoples lives because i feel that they initially contradict each other. Science is based off of pure knowledge and facts as to where religion is based off of purely faith and upbringing. Not many people want to join these two together because they think if you do there will be arguments between believers of science and believers of religion. Both scientist and religious people have strong feelings of what they believe, and because of this there will always be conflict between the two. I myself am a really religious person but as I grow up I start to question some of the things about all religions, not just my own. Science brings up a lot of questions in the minds of people because like i said it is based on ALL facts, and how could someone fight facts. Then again our beliefs is what gives us hope and a reason to keep trying our hardest, which leads me to a quote from the book 'Matter vs. Spirit', "The more I study the mystical, the more physical it becomes and the more i study the physical, the more mystical it turns out to be."
