1. Why is Faqir Chand’s experience important in understanding the projective nature of religious visions and miracles?
Faqir Chand an Indian sage who achieved an advance state of meditation that allowed him to experience out of body experiences. This led him to understand that one thing is certain that he knows nothing. He was able to demonstrate that religious vision and miracles an illusion created by the individual as a mechanism of survival. He describes incidents where people undergo near death experiences and are able to survive thank to his guidance. In a letter the lady describes falling into a river and had begun to drown in that instance Faqir appear and saved her. Her faith in him had created this illusion in order to invigorate her with a sense to continue to live. Faqir explains that all religious vision and miracles are just a construct of the individual mind. It is an illusion which occurs under great stress or pressure which allows individual to survive the trauma.
2. What is meant by the phrase, “philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy.”
The phrase can be broken down into two parts but both speak about the foundation of what philosophy is. The first part to this phrase states, “philosophy done well is science” the meaning behind this part is clear by reflecting back on these 6 week one thing I’ve realize is that it is in fact that philosophy has a direct correlation with science. I would have never thought that quantum theory, string theory, Darwin theory of evolution, and neurology were subjects that philosophy had been dealing ever since Socrates. At the core of science is philosophy therefore one can say philosophy is science. Now how well an idea is developed, debated, and tested under the scrutiny of the scientific method make it more the compelling case that yes in fact philosophy done great is science. While, the contrary is true was well philosophy can develop ideas and concepts but if not fully developed and tested they cannot be considered science.
