1. Why is Faqir Chand's experiences important in understanding the projective nature of religious visions and miracles?
Well, Faqir Chand inspires me with two statements he makes in the book, The Unknown Sage. The first statement are the words by his Guru, Hazur Data Dayal, “you are yourself Supreme Master of your time” (pg 29) , and secondly his words on page 45, “nobody, can tell about the entire universe. it is indescribable.” Why are these words relevant to the question, well, because to understand the projective nature of religious visions and miracles is like Faqir says to his Guru Hazur, “I am, myself ignorant of the truth” (pg 31 The Unknown Sage) yes, we are ignorant of the truth of miracles and religious visions. There are three examples he recounts along the book in which we identify religious visions and miracles. The first account of miracles is the faithful follower that sends to Faqir a letter thanking him for saving her from drowning, for in her moments of near death, Faqir appeared to her and rescue her; however, like he said, he did not recall any supernatural occurrence to save her. The second example the film Faqir, and located in page 29, he had a vision of his guru Hazur at the moment when he feared for his life and the lives of his fellow military companions in Iraq, when they were running out of ammo and were fearing of the oppression that was coming on their way. However, a vision of his guru appeared to him to fear not and not waste his ammo. Furthermore, he was welcomed, and worshiped by satsangis that believed that he had saved their lives, for they followed his instructions from a vision of him in battle. The third account, he tells is the death of his brother Wazir in page 37, and a death that came after his words to God: oh God, I am beaten for this child, either kill me or take him away.” These three examples illustrates me, in good Science belief, that “WE” make miracles and religious visions appear in our consciousness, and thus in our mind in times of desperate need, or the common folk belief, “we hold religion as a heaven in our dark times.” So, I guess another way to look at these examples is to question the brain function at the time of occurrence of both faqir’s and the woman drowning. Are these freak occurrences be a result of electrical signals from our brain to our eyes, and thus projecting a holy image? But, how do we explain rare occurrences like the death of his brother? Can words be heard by God? The point is that “WE” are Supreme Master of our time, actions, and thoughts. How? well, Faqir could have leaved his life regretting his words about his brother, and thus his death; however, he chose to live his live to aid others to seek the Truth, and I guess like he said, “nobody, can tell about the entire universe. it is indescribable.”
2. What is meant by the phrase, "philosophy done well is science; philosophy done poorly remains philosophy."
Well, often we believe that things that can be proven right are the result of doing things right. Therefore, philosophy that can be subjugated by peer evaluation, and can withstand falsifiability, is the done well, and now it is part of science. One example of philosophical question is Newton’s theory of gravity. Yes, Newton’s philosophy was not entirely perfect, but it enlighten the minds of others to perfect his experimental philosophy of gravity; hence, we learn in school as a kid about gravity. However, on the other hand there is the philosophy that it is done poorly and it is still a continuous philosophy, because we often think it is false, or that it could falsify our view on its philosophy, like you said in, The Infinite Shuffle film. One example is the string theory. Many physicists still don’t quite believe that everything, and anything is sync into one universe, or multiverse symphony as I viewed in the string video from previous chapters because of its lack of experimental science. I guess, it is up to us to really define what is really defined and what is not really defined, what is science and what is still a big puzzle. However, nature soon will react to our view of philosophical mysteries, like you said in, The Infinite Shuffle film of this week.
