1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Philosophy is something in which you are required to know the answers of many questions and understand why they do so, the more you know the more you can explain. Physics revolves around facts and with the general rules of the universe, so when it comes to doing Philosophy understanding them makes it easier. Philosophy is defines as the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Understanding both physics and the rules of the universe helps one to have a wider perspective as to what they are trying to explain, and with philosophy the wider the perspective ther better.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Eliminative materialism is a materialist position in the philosophy of mind. From this and what I have found from the readings and the videos is that eliminative materialism is an opinion that we have on a topic according to studies, finding, and facts. An example would be Helios driving the sun across the earth everyday, when in reality we know that the earth revolves around the sun. Another example would be that when one tries to figure out an answer to a question but fails to do so using science, philosophy, and reasoning, the answer seems to be that “god did it”. The last example of this would be when people would think that bad spirits would cause someone to become ill, people realized that it was bacteria.
