Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death because he was accused of corrupting the youth. Being that he was an Atheist, this did not help the situation at all because religion was a very big part of life back in Socrates time. It was said that he pushed his ideas on people, as if they had no choice but to believe that he was right. All of Socrates philosophies questioned the general truth from back then, and the higher up officials never agreed with people who questioned their way of life. They felt as if this were a crime and sentenced Socrates to death. In the book, "Why was Socrates sentenced to death," Socrates himself states, "Wonder not, Socrates, at what we say, but answer, since you are accustomed to make use of questions and answers. For, come, what charge have you against us and the city, that you attempt to destroy us?" To further explain, basically, they think that Socrates is on the road to destroy their city just from a few philosophies he has proposed to the youth. After the officials realize no harm can be done and decide to let Socrates keep his life, but by this time Socrates wanted to live no longer as he felt that he had done what he needed to do in his life thus far.
Why is there a conflict for some between science and religion?
Personally I believe in both sides of this question. Religion plays a huge factor in life and so does science. Some people lean to the science side because they feel that it can be proved with different and several experiments where as some people believe God is the ultimate and he himself created everything which is why we have science as well. There are some things that science has yet to identify where the bible itself has already identified and the bible was written thousands of years ago. Then again there is one question that I always ask myself, where did people start? Should I believe in Adam and Eve like my grandmother would say or should I believe in Evolution which is still yet to be proven even though it sounds more convincing than imaginary people. Growing up my father always let me think how I wanted and never forced me to believe in anything because he too questions what is the real truth?
