Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
Socrates was a wise old man. He was a philosopher, and he taught the youth during his old age. He taught the youth because he wanted to teach them to think for themselves, like he did. He wanted them to question life and the way things were. Because of this, he was accused of corrupting the youth. Although it was only the government’s definition of corruption because in reality he was simply teaching the youth to question things. However, the government took it to be corrupting the youth because the things that Socrates was teaching them were against the views and ways of the Athenian government. The accuser of Socrates claims that “he says that I am a poet or maker of gods, and that I invent new gods and deny the existence of old ones; this is the ground of his indictment” (Jowett). Because Socrates is accused of this, he is sentenced to drinking poison.
Why is there a conflict (for some) between science and religion?
”The limits of our skull are the limits of our understanding”. That was in the video The Limits of Science: Illuminated Ideas in 56 Seconds. The video captures the problems of science and the capacity for human knowledge. The video describes that no matter how much knowledge that science can give us, humans are still limited by their own neuropathology. The reading talks about the conflict between science and religion having to do with a miscommunication of the definition of matter. Christians and other religious fundamentalists are often upset by scientific discoveries concerning the past because they often feel that it threatens their religion. However, science is not trying to discredit anyone’s religion, but rather simply trying to explain the mysteries of life. There is conflict between the two because of the different views of what matter is. Religious fundamentalists believe that it is God, and therefore they do not like it when scientists try to explain what it is.
