Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings work?
As in the article Explaining Evolution: Darwin’s DNA: A Brief Introduction to Evolutionary Philosophy, Part 1, written by Andrea Diem-Lane, “Knowing the conditions from where we originally arose is a central key to understanding why we survive as we do in the present” (Diem-Lane). The reasons for this is that if humans truly want to understand how and why they live today, then they must learn how humans got to be the way they are today. Learning about the theory of evolution is very vital for this. If one learns about evolution then they are learning about their past, and learning about their past ensures them knowledge of their present. By learning about the history of evolution one has a better chance of understanding how human beings work. The theory of evolution is also important “since it serves as the backbone for almost every one of the sciences—from astronomy to neuroscience” (Diem-Lane).
Which questions do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
The video The Darwin Debate on the Mind of Man/ How far does Natural Selection Extend, seeks to answer this question. In the video, they talk about how Wallace does not believe that natural selection, or evolutionary theory, can explain consciousness in the mind of man. He does not see proof that evolutionary theory and natural selection over time could contribute to the awakening of a consciousness in the mind of the human mind. For Darwin, it was the exact opposite. He believes that natural selection and the mutation of genes over time has created consciousness in the human mind. Evolutionary theory also cannot answer what mistakes it has made. In the video The Magic of Evolution: Daniel Dennet’s Card Trick Analogy, Daniel Dennet points out that evolution has made many mistakes throughout time, but they are all invisible to humans. Evolutionary theory has no way of answering what is a mistake and what is not a mistake.
