Why was Socrates sentenced to death? Why is there a conflict between science and religion?
Socrates was charged for not believing in the gods recognized by the State and by corrupting the youths with his teachings. With the charges against him, Socrates feels indifferent and nonchalant in response to the situation. He believed in his own thoughts and idea about god, and was not touched by the idea of death. He believed in “his God more than he fears man” (p.2). This goes to show, how strong his character and beliefs were. He did not allow fear to move him. Plus, during Socrates’ conversation with Euthyphus, he states “the right way of giving is to give to them in return what they want of us. There would be no, in an art which gives to any ne that which he does not want” (p. 25). This is Socrates way of saying his devotion to the Gods and his reject against other human satisfaction. While Socrates feel this way, Meletus believes that Socrates is a poet maker of gods, and that Socrates invented new gods to change the existence of old one. This idea stirred up a commotion when it’s brought forth to the world. The “world” does not like the idea of change or new ideas. Like Euthyphus emphasized “piety is that which is dear to the gods, and impiety is which is not dear to those”. So, from this idea, the state believes Socrates acts on impiety. Therefore, he is shunned by his beliefs.
There is a conflict between science and religion, because of the ideas that consumes us in an abstract way which it is hard to accept. For example, we as a human, is controlled at the molecular level. We don’t have a direct “existence” but only a bunch of chemicals and cell interacting with one another. So it’s hard to grasp scientifically, when throughout human civilization there is a given reason for events that happen. Big events occurred are projected from the gods. They were the reasoning behind thunder, love, food, weather forecast. It’s imaginary and forgiving, when people put their faith in god’s hand rather than be thought the real scientific reasoning behind the entire phenomenon that happens on earth. Yet, science is still a process of “discovery and along that pathway there will be false starts, differences of opinion, falsifications… and facts that are always subject to alteration or even wholesale elimination” (p.15). So that’s where the conflicts stand: what is considered more acceptable.
Plus after watching the video The Limits of Science: Illuminated ideas in 56 seconds, it basically states we are still limited to science and facts of phenomenon that takes place. Since the “limits of our skull are the limits of our understanding”. We will always try to solve the mysteries in life, but we will always encounter problems which will prohibit us from knowing absolutely everything. Religion on the other hand, gets upset when science try to undermine the meaning of their beliefs and historical events.
