1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy?
Philosophy in general is about studying and solving fundamental problems by knowledge, existence, values, and many more about life. Physics is connected to philosophy because physics emphasizes and involves scientific theories that needed to experiment and explain problems such as how matters work or figure out the possibilities of an incident. Einstein has believed in the idea that ‘‘the universe makes sense and runs on meaningful physical law,’’ suggest by Edmund Bolles in the book Quantum Weirdness. The book also described how quantum theory deals with atoms and other sub-atomic particles. These principles of the universe and physics have to be discovered by some scientist going through steps of applying knowledge and values. In one example, the universe itself seems to be a natural thing, but scientist Schrofinger combines Vedanta thoughts and ‘‘research on quantum physics, specifically wave mechanics’’ with his own view of existence and reality to work on quantum mechanics.
2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Eliminative materialism was described in the three-part video that phenomenon cannot be fully comprehensive by mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, or sociology or any academic can explain what it really is. It is an intellectual activity that people mentally believed in but do not exist in real life. To make it easier to understand, the second video included examples such as thunder come from Thor in myth but scientifically it is created by electrical magnetic current. Diseases were caused by bad spirits but we know bacteria and virus affect our body immune system. Lastly, did ghost circulates throughout our body and pulls our muscles? No, it was our central nervous system processes and controls our own bodily function. Additionally, Churchland supposed that folk psychology also utilizes desire, motivation, love, anger, and free will. Neural Surfer concludes that eliminative materialism has eliminated ‘‘the gods or spirits in favor of more precise and accurate physiological explanations.’’
