Physics is the study of matter and motion through space and time it also covers studies of energy and how the universe exists and operates, while philosophy covers a huge range of studies such as our existence and reality. Without physics philosopher wouldn’t be able to understand why the universe exists or be able to further their knowledge about matter. Physics is done by mathematics and equations and can be proven as facts while philosophy is based on opinions and many different views by a huge range of different thinkers. So in order to understand why the world exists and our own existence philosophy needs physics as a foundation to start their process of why and how the universe exists. In the readings from Quantum Weirdness the author states, “Our evolution has bounded what we can and cannot know about the world around us. Because of this our brains are not well adapted to understand either the very large or the very small” (p.2). This quote itself explains one reason why we need physics to understand philosophy; because of physics some of these wonders have been able to be given some reason and deeper thoughts for philosophy.
Eliminative materialism states that our own understandings of our minds are false and that mental states of psychology such as beliefs and desires do not exist. In simplicity it basically says that what we think and feel should be nonexistent. In the film ‘Eliminative Materialism Intelligent Reductionism’ part three states, “Eliminative materialism is reason written large, we have allowed it eliminative materialism to change our thinking about almost everything except ourselves. When it come to understanding our own motivations such as desire, motivation and love, it could be describes as it happening in our own beings.” Another example the film provided was that instead of discussing about the mythology thunder God Thor they talked about electrical magnetic currents and how instead of blaming this god for these events it was the currents that caused it. I think the reason behind this is that since eliminative materialism states what I mentioned above, there is no such thing as ancient metaphysical superstition. The film explains how metaphysical superstition isn’t real that it only exists in our mind it gives the example how before people blamed spirits for or sicknesses, but in reality later was proven that bacteria and viruses in fact do exist. Eliminative materialism has given us the opportunity to explain unexplained concepts through facts and science.
