1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe so important in doing philosophy? 2. What is eliminative materialism? Provide three examples of it.
Understanding physics and the general rule of the universe is so important in doing philosophy, because one cannot answer a problem without the other. As mentioned it is hard to play chess without knowing the rules of it first. So like the universe, we have to understand how it works. An example from Niels Bohr’s quote “Physics is to be regarded not so much as the study of something a priori given, but rather as the development of methods of ordering and surveying human experience”. Human experience is gained over the years which are how we can differentiate what is happy and sad. When we encounter something that makes us feel exuberant, we don’t immediately put the experience we felt to the word happy. It is actually the trigger of the happy chemicals released into our thoughts again that made us remember what is termed “happy”. This idea can be expanded to the understanding of philosophy. Philosophy is a growing topic as to what we know and experience. So in order to understanding physics it has to come from our thoughts and understanding from philosophy.
2. Eliminative materialism is wisdom at large. In the past, when something could not be solved scientifically, it is usually pointed to god for reasoning. In the recent centuries, scientific knowledge has put aside the mystical reasoning of gods and spirit which terms the word eliminative materialism. It replaced old thoughts with new reasoning like Thor and thunder god with now electromagnetic current. Spirits causing diseases are now seen from the origin of bacteria and viruses. This goes to show when scientific knowledge and reasoning was not developed in the past, people resorted to mystical reasoning for all their answers. It may be easily accepted before and feeling the comfort of spirits controlling phenomenon instead of now knowing microscopic viruses overriding ones immune system. Eliminative materialism is what science and knowledge was able to uncover from the past ideas.
